Most drivers would prefer to make appointments with the Oklahoma DPS so they can plan ahead of time and not run into any unexpected crowds or people. Under some conditions, you will be able to schedule an appointment, but in many cases you will not, and will have to wait in line like everyone else. With a little planning and foresight, you will be able to maneuver your way around the DPS efficiently and get tasks finished quickly. This guide will cover which services you can make appointments for, as well as provide useful tips for your next DPS trip.

Scheduling an Appointment with the Oklahoma DPS

To make your drivers license exam (road skills test) appointment, simply consult the list of state-approved official exam stations. If you don’t see a phone number listed next to your potential branch, it means you will have to visit directly to make the appointment. The CDL (commercial license) tests are by appointment only at (405) 425-2196. A handful of branches offer an online reservation system that allows you to schedule appointments for various services. There are a variety of options, including “ID Card,” “Learner Permit,” and “Motorcycle License.”

Taking Advantage of Online Services

The Oklahoma DPS offers a few online services, and you can potentially save time or eliminate a trip altogether by utilizing them. Drivers License or ID card renewals, vehicle insurance verifications, and address changes can be handled online so you don’t even have to get up from your chair to access these services. The option to update insurance information and schedule drivers license examinations online will be available in the near future. If your branch doesn’t take appointments and the particular service you require isn’t available online, then you must visit a DPS office directly.

Times to Avoid Going to the Oklahoma DPS

If it seems like there is no avoiding the trip, then going at a more ideal time when it is less busy is your best bet. There are certain days and times to avoid the trip because of heavy congestion in the lines. A simple DPS task could take up your entire day if you do not plan out ahead. Avoid heading to the DPS during:

  • The lunchtime rush – many workers want to settle their DPS errand during their lunch break
  • The beginning and ending days of each month
  • Mondays and Fridays – people tend to get their errands done before or immediately after the weekend
  • Right before a major holiday

Instead, head to the DPS during these non-peak times:

Highway Patrol Driving Test

  • Right before lunch, immediately upon opening if possible
  • During the middle of the month
  • During the middle of the week, Tuesdays to Thursdays

While heading to the Oklahoma DPS during these times doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get in and out of there in no time, it will nonetheless save time off of your DPS visit.
