Quite prescient, this Bryant fellow, don't you think? Sci-fi fans have been looking for that definitive Blade Runner magic ever since many of them first laid eyes on this groundbreaking movie way back when. That it took a whopping 25 years for this film to be finally done in a manner that befits its director Sir Ridley Scott's vision is a cinematic travesty. As any fan of the movie can attest to, Blade Runner's long-running saga of home video release delays, poor quality video transfers and the existence of an incredible six different versions of film (not counting Scott's latest version, dubbed 'The Final Cut'), only helped to compound the problem of the movie not getting the true recognition that it so richly deserves.
In fact, the film only received a lukewarm response from most moviegoers when it was first released in 1982. Many did not understand the complex story (even with the last-minute addition of a voice-over narration holding the audience's hand) and for what it was worth, it had to go up against the phenomenon that was E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial that fateful summer. Having a dark and almost despondent story certainly did not help its case when compared against the sunnier feel-good fairytale of E.T. It was only years later that Blade Runner began to garner considerable attention when it was released onto the home video market. With the popularity of VHS growing during the '80s, a whole new generation of sci-fi fans got the chance to experience Blade Runner for what it really was and many soon realized the genius of Ridley Scott's dystopian view of the future.
With the film's cult following growing larger each year, a new 'Director's Cut' of the film was subsequently rushed and re-released into the theaters in 1992. Although it was labeled a director's cut, Ridley Scott, much like the original theatrical version, did not really have full artistic control over this version as well. Thus, the saga of producing that elusive and definitive version of Blade Runner continued. As the 20th anniversary of the film approached, Scott was given the green light to begin work on the version of the film that he had always wanted. As soon as word got out, rumors started flying around the Internet as to when that much anticipated version might be released. Unfortunately, several more years came and went before everything was finalized, just in time for the 25th anniversary. So, for the third time in 25 years, Blade Runner was again released to theaters, this time as first intended by Scott's original vision. As the director was given full creative control over 'The Final Cut,' this should hopefully be the last definitive version we'll ever see of Blade RunnerBlade Runner - Deck Art-765 Limited Edition Of 500

Well, for all you rabid Blade Runner fans out there waiting with bated breath, the time for rejoicing is almost at hand. The wrangling over the film's distribution rights has finally been resolved and Warner Bros. is now able to release the definitive home video edition of this beloved film. Releasing on DVD and also both new high-definition formats at the same time, Blade Runner is now made available as one of the most comprehensive multi-disc box sets ever produced for a single movie.
For the standard-definition release, there are two versions. First, you have the four-disc DVD Collector's Edition box set (reviewed here), which offers up four versions of the film -- the new Scott-approved 'Final Cut,' the 1982 U.S. Theatrical Cut, the 1982 International Theatrical Cut and the 1992 Director's Cut -- and a comprehensive list of extras that fill up two whole discs. The next step up, the five-disc Ultimate Collector's Edition DVD set, apart from the four discs found here, includes an extra disc that contains the rare Workprint version of the film and the entire package is encased inside a numbered limited edition Deckard briefcase that also includes various collectibles. Quite an impressive package.
But why such a fuss over a 25-year old sci-fi film from the low-tech '80s? Good question. To answer that one would have to travel back to 1968 when Stanley Kubrick's pioneering sci-fi masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey was released. Considered to be the granddaddy of modern sci-fi films, 2001 gave audiences a sense of realism in the genre (using then-groundbreaking special effects), but offered very little when it came to a traditional narrative story. Despite polarizing opinions for and against the film upon its initial release, 2001: A Space Odyssey is now widely recognized as one of the best films of the century.
The same can be said of Blade Runner. After completing Alien, considered one of the best sci-fi-horror films of all time, Scott was not too keen on taking on yet another sci-fi movie. However, fate intervened and Scott was able to commit himself fully into this lesser-known project. And commit he did. Scott had a specific vision for the film, one that calls for it to be set in a noir-ish, not-so-distant dystopian future. The dark and depressing setting, together with the clever subtleties of the camerawork and script, worked against it when shown to a general audience. Many had trouble understanding what the story was about and just did not get the true nature of the film. It did not help matters that the studio went ahead and made changes to Scott's version of the film before it was released, removing key scenes, adding horrible voiceover narration and, of course, tacking on the controversial 'happy ending.'
Only when the film hit the home video market did it finally appeal to a larger audience. With the ability to watch the film multiple times and study it more closely, people began to 'see' the various subtleties and were finally able to grasp the true concept of the film. It was then that Blade Runner began to attract a cult following eager to learn more of Scott's original intent for the film. Fans began asking explosive questions like, 'Is Deckard really a replicant?' When the 'Director's Cut' of the film was released, that notion was finally put to rest. Or maybe not. One can vehemently argue this question one way or the other and that is exactly the genius of Blade Runner. It is a film so open to interpretation, many differing opinions can co-exist at the same time. Ridley Scott provides all the visual clues and it is up to the audience to identify and decode them any way they want.
